Day 225.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.'” (Jeremiah 23:16, 17 ESV)
Wow. This is the message of our culture and just about every movie these days that tries to put forth a “moral” message. “everything will be alright…just follow your heart!” If you’re not a careful watcher then the message pulls you in. It sounds so proverbial. But reading Jeremiah we find that really it is not new at all. In fact, this was the message of the false prophets of ancient Judah. It is one of the reasons they were cast into exile.
The good news is that God will give His remnant new hearts. If the old hearts were so easily deceived and hardened to the Word of God, the new heart will love the Lord.
I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart. (Jeremiah 24:7 ESV)
