Day 240.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in his room of pictures? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.'” (Ez 8:12)

In a vision God takes Ezekiel to Jerusalem and shows him the practices of the people, in their setting up of idols and worshiping them in their secret ways. In this scene, he shows him what the elders are doing hidden away in their rooms thinking that no one else sees. What things do you do when no one else is watching? Anonymity was once something that you had to work hard to achieve. With the rise of the internet, you have to work NOT to be anonymous. That creates a sense – a false sense – that no one is watching what we do. But the Lord always sees, and he is always concerned. What gets whispered in the dark will be shouted from the rooftops. That’s a frightening thought! At the same time, we know that God also provides a remedy for our sin in Christ. God does not expose without purpose, and that purpose is always for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purposes.
