Day 141.

My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
Awake, my glory!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations. (Psalm 57:7-9 ESV)

The title of this Psalm tells us that David wrote this when he fled from Saul in the cave. It is hard to imagine worse circumstances than David faced. The King he has served has turned against him and seeks to kill him. He has escaped with nothing and is living in caves with no recourse for things to change other than to turn to the Lord. This is, of course, what he does. God becomes his refuge and in the midst of his circumstances, which haven’t gotten any better, his soul finds joy. He finds a security far greater than any other that he has known. His heart is steadfast. It does not feel the need to continue its search for help, and so he cannot keep silent. The joy that he knows in the Lord when all else has been stripped away cannot be kept inside.

Have you ever had moments like that? Where you felt so good that you couldn’t help but burst out singing or shouting or dancing about? If trials is what it takes to discover God to be this great then may trials come. Are you ready to say that?
