Day 17.

So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived. (Gen 19:29)

Lot lived in the city of Sodom, which God destroyed by raining down fire and sulfur from heaven. But Lot was rescued. This verse explains that Lot’s rescue was a result of Abraham’s intercession for the city. Before the angels that brought the destruction went to Sodom, the stopped and visited with Abraham and explained what they were about to do. it was then that Abraham was bold enough to plead with them to relent if they found 10 righteous people in the city (his intercession began with fifty and he bargained with them down to 10). It didn’t turn out as Abraham had planned. As it turns out there were not 10 righteous people in the city. But God knew the desire of Abraham’s heart in that he was concerned for Lot and Lot’s family. While Sodom was not spared, Lot and his family were.

This gives us great hope when we think about friends and family that we know who are lost, to pray for God to rescue them from his own judgment.

Do you pray for anyone like this?
