We have great need to understand the reason God goes to such great lengths to save us. He saved us that we might belong to him as children, with his image renewed in us. He saved us that we might live according to his law which is our rule (i.e. standard) of life. While we have been washed and given new hearts, we must still take heed against the many pressures that would draw us and tempt us away, whether because they are enticing or threatening. Perseverance is what we need for the day of Christ’s return (and the judgment) is drawing nearer. One vitally important means of preserving us in this is our fellowship with each other, centering on worship where we are continually reminded of the greatness of God and his faithfulness. The writer of Hebrews explains,

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Heb 10:24-25)
