Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. (1TI 4:7-8 ESV)
Godliness does not happen without training and training requires discipline and intentionality. Without it, we are prone to drift under the influence of peer pressure and the world’s way of looking at things. We tend to overestimate ourselves.
Paul later tells Timothy to watch himself and his doctrine closely, again showing that godliness is not a given. This is also how we train ourselves for godliness, by steeping our minds and hearts in the gospel.
