Day 144.

Then David said, “Here shall be the house of the Lord God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel.” (1 Chronicles 22:1 ESV)

This surprised me as I had not thought about the circumstances that led up to David’s designated place for the temple that Solomon was to build. This was the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. The chapter earlier says,

And David built there an altar to the Lord and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering. Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. (1 Chronicles 21:26, 27 ESV)

This location would have served as a perpetual reminder of the mercy of God, and how he did not treat the people as their sins deserve as the sword of judgment was sheathed. Now, the temple is the Church, built of living stones, that serve as a perpetual reminder of the sword of judgment that was sheathed because of the sacrifice of Christ.
