Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,
who exult in your name all the day
and in your righteousness are exalted.
For you are the glory of their strength;
by your favor our horn is exalted.
For our shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel. (Psalm 89:15-18 ESV)
The fetal shout is the call to worship amid the congregating pilgrims as they come to Jerusalem for one of the annual feasts. It is pointing to a time of congregational worship in which the people walk in the light of God’s face and exult in God’s name (hearing from the Torah and singing together the psalms). It is in eye congregation that they get a sense of the glory and wonder of God as they hear the people shout the mighty accomplishments of God. What is more, they hear and sing of these accomplishments that are for them. God has exalted them above the nations of the earth that he might establish a people for himself. God has out his own name on the line with this people.
