Digging Your Own Hole

Day 7.
Behold, the wicked man conceives evil
and is pregnant with mischief
and gives birth to lies.
He makes a pit, digging it out,
and falls into the hole that he has made.
His mischief returns upon his own head,
and on his own skull his violence descends. (Psalm 7:14-16 ESV)

There is a difference between the righteous man and the wicked man. The wicked man has things to hide. As a result, he crafts lies to cover his tracks. The problem is, lying is hard work and they never seem to be alone. One lie leads to another lie to bolster the first lie when it begins to look flimsy. That leads to yet another and another. Sooner or later the wicked finds himself in a hole that he has dug for himself with all of his lies and he’s stuck. Eventually it catches up to him and his world comes crashing down around him.

The righteous man, on the other hand, invites God to search him out. He doesn’t seek to hide his life. That is not to say that he does not sin, but the difference between a righteous man and a wicked man is that the righteous man trusts God and repents whereas the wicked man tries to hide from God.

Have you ever found yourself holding back the truth from those God has put in your life? Do you think you can hide it forever? Even if you succeed with people, God knows. What will you do when you must answer to Him?

There is still hope for the wicked man. He is invited to repent – to stop hiding his sin and turn away from it and trust God. Repent before the Lord and anyone else affected by your cover up.

If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;
he has bent and readied his bow;
he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
making his arrows fiery shafts. (Psalm 7:12, 13 ESV)
