Jesus makes no bones about calling the Jews out on the carpet for their religiousness that misses the point. They loudly and faithfully went through the motions without a real faith.
And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me; (Mark 7:6 ESV)
I wonder in what ways we fall into the same trap. What traditions have we elevated in such a way that give us a sense of religious pride?
And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! (Mark 7:9 ESV)
